Such a guarantee would certainly let the Soviets off the hook now. The
West seems all too willing, in the cause of world peace, to let Moscow
squirm away free. The Moslem world, however, may not prove to be so
cooperative.
The next few months should show us whether the Afghanistan crisis will
be defused or whether the Russian quagmire will become muddier yet, with
far-reaching impact upon Europe.
