democratic .... These thinkers believe that there are human elites, and
that such elites should lead the rest of us. Their critics, however,
forcefully respond that Hitler and his followers already have given the
modern world a sufficient lesson in the consequences of elitism, romantic
paganism and blind heroism.
"The reality of the new fascism is not that it jeopardizes democracy,
but that it corr.

Yet it is probably bl!tter for everyone that
it has come into the open, where those who have connived at it must
now confront the consequences of what they have done."
Quite clearly, Europe still awaits a popular groundswell support for
authoritarian solutions. A downward spiral in the world economy, perhaps
arising out of accelerated trouble i,1 the Middle East, probably would have
to come first.
