significantly, Bavarian Minister-President Franz Josef Strauss has long
predicted the inevitable demise of the Free Democrats. He has said that
their obvious lack of support did not entitle them to keep top cabinet
posts. Will Strauss now put almost unbearable pressure on Chancellor Hel­
mut Kohl to have himself installed as West German foreign or economics min­
ister--or both? How long can Mr. Kohl keep Herr Strauss biding his time in
Munich?
Not too many people were excited by elections for Europe's Parliament, a
body still lacking in real power. Most of Britain, in fact, was "ablaze
with indifference" about the voting, according to one television announcer.
Nevertheless, the elections had considerable secondary impact and provided
a possible tip-off of things to come.
